This past spring, I learned how to make homemade lye soap. I have made two more batches of soap this fall. I really enjoy making it. It is rewarding and I could see how it could become a small business. Here in the USA, it is crazy how much you could spend on one bar of soap made of natural ingredients with all kinds of fragrances. I have looked at websites ranging from $4 to $20 per bar.
When I was 6 months old, I got gastroenteritis which is a medical term for inflammation of the stomach and small intestines. It causes a combination of diarrhea and vomiting. I lost 12% of my body weight in just one day. I cleaned my system out from top to bottom. I was put in the hospital and put in IV’s. My mom has told me stories of them tying me to the hospital bed because I would pull the IV’s out and after how she would sprinkle good bacteria on my food. I am very thankful that I was born in the USA. I survived.
Gastroenteritis primarily affects children and those in the developing world. It results in about three to five billion cases and causes 1.4 million deaths a year. A supply of easily accessible uncontaminated water and good sanitation practices are important for reducing rates of infection and clinically significant gastroenteritis. Simple hand washing have been found to decrease incidence and prevalence rates of gastroenteritis in both the developing and developed world by as much as 30%. Also read as many as 3000 children could be saved daily if they had access to soap to wash their hands after using the bathroom and before eating.
The numbers amaze me. I could have been one of those deaths. That is why I am becoming passionate about making soap. I have seen the living conditions in Rwanda and can only imagine what it will be like in Tsumkwe, Namibia. I am thankful to have learned and hope to share this with the ladies in Tsumkwe. It can save their lives and be a possible small business for them.
Excited to be going to improve their nutrient through agriculture and their hygiene through soap making. Through these relationships, I will be able to share the love of Christ.
